We wish to bring to the attention of pediatricians the danger of using hydrogen peroxide for colon lavage in infants. Since Olim described its use combined with saline, various dilutions ranging from 0.75% to 1.25% have been recommended by increasing numbers of authors for infants who have meconium plug syndrome or those with meconium ileus.

We have seen lethal and near lethal complications resulting from the use of such dilutions of hydrogen peroxide in the small and large bowel of infants, and we have first hand information of similar complications in the hands of other pediatric surgeons.
